The Public Landing Restaurant & Banquet Center is housed in the historic Gaylord Building which was built in 1838. This building played a vital role in one of the great enterprises of the 19th century: the digging of the 96-mile-long Illinois & Michigan Canal.
Warehouse & Store of Col. Geo. B. Martin Lockport, IL The Gaylord Building is one of 29 National Trust Historic Sites and is on the United States National Register of Historic Places. The 14,000 sq ft building is an adaptively reused industrial building in historic Lockport, Illinois along the I&M Canal in the nation’s first National Heritage Corridor.
The handsome limestone warehouse was the construction depot for the canal, which linked Lake Michigan with the Illinois River, opening the Midwest to commerce and industry.
In 1987 the Gaylord Building opened to the public, featuring The Public Landing Restaurant and Banquet center in addition to the adjacent museum.
In early 2009, this historic building was featured in the Public Enemies movie starring Johnny Depp bringing Public Landing to the forefront of Chicago and the surrounding community. Public Landing's historic exterior was the basis for its role in Depp's film. The Gaylord Building sign was replaced with "Rockford Tool and Die" as the building acted as the backdrop for a scene in which a heist was planned.
